Last September body camera footage of Rochester police officers’ attempt at arresting Daniel Prude was released. The footage showed the officers pinning him to the ground while he was naked and handcuffed. The officers placed a spit sock over his head as he screamed out until he was no longer breathing.
According to the Associated Press, the officers involved in his death will not face any criminal charges for the incident, which took place last March. The grand jury made the official announcement on Tuesday.
State Attorney General Letitia James talked about the jury’s decision and said, “The criminal justice system has frustrated efforts to hold law enforcement officers accountable for the unjustified killing of African Americans. And what binds these cases is a tragic loss of life in circumstances in which the death could have been avoided.”
